Chapter 16 - Luigi
Iâm trying my absolute best to control myself. She kissed me.
On the lips.
She was against my body, and I could feel the curve of her body pressed against mine. No, I canât do this.
I lead her through to my bedroom to my large closet. It used to be a walk-in closet once upon a time.
I swing the doors open, divide the clothes in half and push them to the left and right. I then touch a pressure-sensitive part of the back wall for it to pop out with a hiss.
Anastasia snorts, âYou really are set up like James Bond or something.â
âDonât Russians hate James Bond?â I ask, teasing her.
âOnly the ones stupid enough to make their plans public,â she laughs. Itâs the sweetest sound in the world. I love her laugh.
I push aside the door and reveal my emergency stash of guns, including my sniping rifle and gear. I also take out the bulletproof vests and hand one to her. âIâm going to have to insist you wear this.â
âReally?â she asks.
âIf youâre coming with, youâre wearing a vest. Iâm not taking any chances out in public,â I explain. I carry what I need to the bed, and I put my own vest on.
The vests are under our clothes. If you didnât know better, you wouldnât notice, which is the idea.
I pack all the parts into a neat briefcase. I love this particular rifle. I put it together in under a minute and take it apart even faster. I carry the case out of the apartment, leading Anastasia down to the parking garage. I take my car this time, one of the throwaway ones that no one can trace back to me. The person the tags are registered to is permanently in a mental health hospital.
We head toward the cafe, and I approach carefully, looking for any signs of trouble. Two blocks away, I park and feed a meter, motioning for Anastasia to follow me into the building and up the stairs.
âArenât we a bit far away?â she whispers as we climb into the elevator.
I shake my head. âDonât worry about it. Weâll be fine.â
The lift takes us to the top floor, at which point we take the stairs to the roof. I lead Ana over to the edge I have come to know so well. This is one of my usual places to snipe from. It is a good ruse. No one thinks something will happen in public. Before it was a French cafe, it was a coffee place.
I hand Anastasia the binoculars. âFocus them down there, two blocks. Youâll see the French cafe and people sitting outside,â I explain.
âI see a bunch of people sitting around talking and eating,â she says as I quickly put my rifle together. The wind whips around me, and I frown, setting up the bipod as well, just in case. I mount the rifle to the bipod, slide down to one knee, and settle myself into position. I look through the scope, down toward the cafe.
